alsamixer seems to work without errors, but trying to play a sound using aplay yields the following output:
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:866:(snd1_pcm_direct_initialize_slave) snd_pcm_hw_params_any failed ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to initialize slave aplay: main:608: audio open error: Invalid argument
Thanks

I need help with the sound on our appliance. We are compiling the kernel (2.6.32.4) with the alsa and the drivers configured as built -in. when the kernel is starting it loads the driver (Intel HDA) and recognizes the sound card successfully (VIA VT82xx).
All the relevant devices appear (under /dev and under /proc). I can see IRQ 17 assigned to the sound. However when trying to play a sound I get an Invalid Argument error.
It seems that the ioctl commands on the device return EINVAL. The dmesg command shows the following messages:
ALSA sound/core/oss/pcm_oss.c:871: No usable accesses ALSA sound/core/oss/pcm_oss.c:871: No usable accesses ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1096: hda_codec_cleanup_stream: NID=0×10 ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1096: hda_codec_cleanup_stream: NID=0×11 ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1096: hda_codec_cleanup_stream: NID=0×12 ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:1096: hda_codec_cleanup_stream: NID=0×13
Does anybody have any idea what can be the problem?
Thanks

Hi,
Some days ago, I figured out (thanks to the ML) how to hear systems’ sounds. I had to install esound, and I was using OSS. Now, System > Preferences > Sounds > Sounds tab plays correctly the sounds, but I can’t hear any other type of sound (i.e. from music played with totem, VLC, videos on Youtube, etc.). The `Devices’ tab gives, for, `Default Mixer Tracks,’ `ALSA’ as a default. I changed it to OSS, and still no sound from videos (even after GNOME session restart).
Should I deinstall esound? What can I do to hear music again? I checked the volume control panel, and everything is okay (no `mute’, etc., and volumes are sufficiently high).
Thanks all.

Hi, Please help me debug sound configuration problem with Cirrus CS4236 motherboard “soundcard” under Puppy Linux 4.3.1, with my Dell Optiplex GX1.
Runs sound fine under both Windows 98SE and Red Hat Linux ver 7.2 (old).
Please see attached file “helpdebug1.txt” for checks I have made and some results.
Thanks for any assistance.
Aloha, Norm, NH7UA
Running Puppy Linux ver 4.3.1, no soundcard capability
Sound works fine under Windows98SE, as CS4236
Sounds works fine under Red Hat Linux (ver 7.2, date 2001), as CS4232
Aslaconf does detect CS4236 (two instances given to choose from!), but does not end up with fully installing it. See console listing “alsaconftest2.txt” & “alsaconftest1.txt” for results (original feedback garbage chars removed)

Thanks for the explanation. This is the first time I’ve noticed this. Perhaps I never issued “cat /proc/asound/cards” when I had the same motherboard as Donn has – that’s going back some years when I only used one sound card. Regards Sid.

It might be useful to use “alsamixer” for the mixer. It is a text based gui. One of the controls there should modify the “synth” gain.
